Turtles

Recently, I have become obsessed with Turtles.

At first, it was because Momma Mia Mia was often the slowest dog at Fast CAT running trials earning the Turtle title. Fast CAT is an AKC Coursing Ability Test where a dog chases a lure on a 100 yard course. Since dogs of all sizes compete, the smallest dogs like Momma Mia are usually the slowest. Even when she runs her fastest, she is often the Turtle and it is a great honor.

The more I thought about the Turtle award, the more it made me to think about how it is like metastatic breast cancer. Living with metastatic breast cancer is very much like the turtle’s slow and steady pace wins the race.

Yes, sometimes we have to hurry up and make a decision if the progression is very aggressive. But when we find a treatment that is working, we have to be patient and almost zen-like with it because if we change something too quickly, it could make things worse. Sometimes it’s necessary to take your time before making a choice.

I have started to incorporate turtles into my life like this necklace my mom got me. I wear it to remind me that it’s ok to take my time and really think about my next step if I have a progression or need to make a change. #breastcancer#metastaticbreastcancer #turtle#slowandsteady
